The OS is the Gateway

The Apple/xAI antitrust dispute has been resolved. But I think the more important question it raises is only beginning.

xAI and X have dropped their antitrust claims against Apple “with prejudice” after saying the claims had been “resolved.”

The terms are confidential.

So, for customers, there is no obvious immediate change.

- No announced Grok integration into Siri.

- No new AI model selector.

- No publicly disclosed change to Apple’s App Store rules.

But the underlying issue is much bigger than Grok versus ChatGPT.

It's about who controls AI distribution.

The original argument from xAI was essentially that Apple’s integration of ChatGPT gave OpenAI privileged access to hundreds of millions of iPhone users in a way competing AI providers could not easily replicate.

That should sound familiar.

We have seen versions of this debate before with:

- browsers

- search engines

- app stores

- default applications

AI assistants could become even more important.

When - not if - AI increasingly sits between users and information, software, services and purchasing decisions, the question of which model is built into the operating system becomes commercially significant.

Today, the direct customer impact of the Apple/xAI resolution appears minimal.

But longer term, I think the important outcome would be genuine model choice at the operating-system level.

Imagine being able to choose:

- ChatGPT for one task.

- Gemini for another.

- Claude for another.

- Grok for another.

- Mistral for another.

- etc.

Or simply setting your preferred AI provider in the same way we increasingly expect to choose browsers, search engines or other default services.

That would shift competition away from securing privileged platform access and toward competing on capability, price, privacy, trust and customer experience.

The confidential nature of the Apple/xAI agreement means we do not yet know whether it contains anything that moves Apple in that direction.

I’m watching these antitrust disputes closely though.

Because one of the major competitive battlegrounds in AI is not just who builds the best model.

It's who controls the gateway through which users reach the AI models.
